Jared Thomas Frantz
WARSAW — Jared Thomas Frantz, 28, Syracuse, was sentenced Monday, Feb. 8, in Kosciusko Circuit Court on charges relating to the deaths of Korbin Foster and Kaleb Lampkin, both 17, who died June 1, 2015, in an accidental drowning.
Frantz, who plead guilty to count one, dealing in a schedule 1 controlled substance, a level 5 felony, was given five years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with two year suspended. He was also ordered to enroll in a rehabilitation facility. Because the charge is a level 5 felony, there is a credit restriction, meaning no good time for each day served. Frantz’s plea agreement dropped the original charge from a level 4 felony to the lessor, but included the charge. A second similar charge was dismissed.
Dan Hampton, prosecutor referred to the victim impact statements sent by the families of Foster and Lampkin. He also noted Frantz primarily sold a synthetic LSD to an individual which allegedly was sold to Foster and Lampkin, causing their deaths.
It was several cases of unforeseen consequences, according to Jay Rigdon, attorney for Frantz, which has led Frantz to the courtroom. Rigdon noted his client did commit a crime, a crime when you think about it had nothing to do with the unforeseen circumstances. “The potential happened,” he stated, referring to the deaths. “The second consequence was his decision to experiment with drugs in the first place. That unforeseen consequence has him setting here.”
Frantz, who has been incarcerated for seven months, stated he has spent that time doing severe soul searching of his faith, the consequences of his bad decisions and those it has affected, becoming emotional. Frantz stated he has spent the last 10 years in and out of jail. “All my charges stem from drug and alcohol. I’m done … I ask for a chance to prove to the court I mean what I say.” Looking at the families of the deceased teens, Frantz could only say he was sorry.
Presiding Senior Judge Duane Huffer asked Frantz about his son. After telling the judge the 6-year-old is happy, energetic and that he loves him, Frantz was asked “can you imagine him being dead?” because of drugs someone gave him. Huffer also stated Frantz has had opportunities over the last 10 years to straighten his life out, but he has not.
Original Case
During Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detective JD Ayres investigation into the death of Foster and Lampkin, who allegedly took a large amount of LSD shortly before their deaths, he was able to determine a juvenile male had furnished the acid to the two. The juvenile admitted on May 29 he purchased one-half vial of acid from Frantz at a Freedom Oil gas station. That individual then met with Lampkin and Foster to sell the drug to them.
